‘3D Studio Lighting setup Tutorial_V008 by using concept of ‘Light-Box Photography setup’ with 3D’s Max and VRay

Written by Saurabh Gupta SRB’,18Feb,2015
Within 3D Visualization the key to a successful studio is the application of real world photography. In order to get the best results you must apply the same rules and understanding, including lighting position, brightness and size. There are many photography techniques and set ups.One of the most common set ups for product photography is the use of what is known as a key light and a fill light.
In this ‘Studio lighting setup tutorial’, I’ll go through all the steps that I used in my studio setup_V008.The Concept/Trick is same as real life’s ‘Light Box Photography setup’, but the principle is simple and can be applied successfully in (almost) any 3d software package.
Ø  Below picture is showing real life’s Light Box Photography setup:-

So,let’s get started…here is a workflow:-
  • The first thing that we going to do is set our working space in linear workflow, this is for to work with a 2.2 Gamma Correction, this is good for to have our colors showing properly and the scene will be more brighter without using more fill lights,so make in the menu make click in Rendering>Gamma/Lut Setup and change all the values like I show you in this snapshot:-
  • Making of Light box setup model:-
  • VRayPhysicalCamera setting (set Shutter speed according to your scene):-
  •  Box Material (which is just like semi-transparent curtain cloth material,so that light can pass through box to inside model):-
  • Base paper Material:-

  • Box corner frame- Plastic material:-
  • Its time to create lights,I will use 3 VRay Sphere lights (same values, instance copy),one in the right, one in the left and the last one in the top as in screenshot:-
  •  We are almost done, see these settings is for to get started, you will have to change it depending of your model of the look that you are looking for,I used below render setup, which is medium quality setting, you can use more high quality setting as you wish:-
  • Its time to make a test render,
I got this raw render, without any post production:-
  • And here is final result after some basic post production:-

I hope this little trick will help you to make your 3D studio render experience more productive.
Once again,a genuine thanks to everyone who has republishing these and shared them with the rest of the 3D's Max/VRay community. This is very much appreciated.
